• Who is shipping, and to whom?
• When is the shipment due to enter the country?
• Where is it going to arrive and at which port?
• What is in the shipment specifically, what is the origin and the value?

Sophisticated technology is used to: assess the shipper and consignee as a “known” or “unknown” security risk; and scrutinize the commodities being declared—description, tariff classification, origin, and value. If the goods are subject to OGD (other government departments such as CFIA, FDA) the information is shared with those entities, and an admittance decision is made well before the shipment arrives..

Customs can choose to physically examine the shipment, or screen via X-ray and radiation, detector dogs, or other means. Depending on their findings the shipment is released, detained for further examination, or seized.
