CFIA Considering Allowing Beef Imports from EU

Under International Trade Issues

CFIA announced Friday October 31st that they are considering allowing the importation of beef products from 19 EU member states that have had their beef inspection system previously approved by Canada. Currently, CFIA is seeking input from industry regarding a proposal that would require industry to segregate beef imported from the EU should importation be allowed.

Although USDA has published the BSE Final Rule, they have not opened their market to all EU member states.

Should FSIS NOT allow the importation of beef from a particular EU member state, Canadian U.S. eligible establishments will be required to segregate beef originating from that member state to ensure that U.S. non-eligible beef meat products are not exported to the United States. The list of USDA Eligible Foreign Establishments can be found here.
