Chile is to fine six shipping companies a total of nearly US$75 million for price fixing that affected 18 customers for about 12 years from 2000.
It alleged CSAV, CCNI, EUKOR Car Carriers, K-Line, MOL and NYK Line conspired to set high prices with unattractive terms for customers.
The shipping lines already have been convicted of the same offence in the US. CSAV was whistleblower and avoided the fine, while NYK received a 50% discount for co-operating with authorities.
Hiroshige Tanioka, a manager at Japan’s K-Line, already has been sentenced by US courts to 18 months in prison and fined US$20,000.
