The union representing container truck drivers at Port Metro Vancouver is calling for the resignation of the new container trucking commissioner over his allegedly close ties to port management.
Andy Smith is the president of the B.C. Maritime Employer’s Association, which represents and bargains on behalf of employers at the port. Smith was praised by B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone when he was appointed by the B.C. government earlier this month as someone with a wealth of experience and in-depth knowledge able to deliver stability to the sector.
But Unifor, the union representing container truck drivers, says Smith is the wrong choice because he’s president of a group that represent employers. Union director Gavin McGarrigle says Smith is in a conflict of interest. Click here to read more.
