USDA Confirms Rule Easing Bulk Exports of Apples to Canada

(STR Trade Report)

The Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service is adopting as final, without change, an April 2014 interim rule that exempts apples shipped to Canada in bulk containers from the minimum requirements and inspection provisions of the Export Apple Act. This rule also defines “bulk container” as one that contains a quantity of apples weighing more than 100 pounds. Inspection is still required for apples shipped in containers of less than 100 pounds that are not otherwise exempt. AMS notes that this rule does not impose any additional reporting or recordkeeping requirements on small or large apple shippers, exporters or carriers.
