Senior Rater


POSITION: Senior Rater

HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm C.S.T

LOCATION: Winnipeg, MB (Head Office)


GHY International has an exciting opportunity available at their Winnipeg Office location. Reporting to Nyree Menzies, Account Manager, the position will consist primarily of accurately rating goods according to the tariff book. The individual must have a thorough understanding of the client’s business. This position requires full comprehension of the pre and post release process and mentor other team members through this procedure. They must be able to competently deal with clients, vendors, and customs in a professional manner. They must have Ocean Containers knowledge.

This position is responsible for assisting the manager in leading the team, they will step up as second in command in the manager’s absence.


  • Analyze documents to determine applicable tariff, duty and tax rates
  • Read and understand tariff classification and explanatory notes
  • Processing ocean shipments and helping with releasing when team is busy.
  • Check entries for other associates within the team
  • Collection of supplementary information or documentation when required from customers, drivers
  • Opening or amending client transactions and validating information
  • Assist clients requesting tariff and duty rates
  • Add, update and maintain item and rate codes
  • Knowledge of E29B’s would be considered an asset
  • Engage in customer communication via telephone/email
  • Ensuring elogs and audit trails support actions
  • Monitor and action 4th and 5th day entries
  • Prepare OGD forms
  • Enter corrections on released shipments
  • Submit RMD correctors
  • Adding new codes and associated OGD’s
  • Thorough comprehension of release process
    • Pre-release and Post-release
  • Monitoring Alerts and answer QC’s

Other Duties as Required, Which May Include:

  • Cadex Holds
  • Auditing files and preparing them for final accounting
  • Dealing with client billing issues
  • ETA, VI entries and E29B’s
  • Weekly VFD checks for client
  • Weekly K84 overrides
  • Apply for national rulings for clients as requested
  • Familiarity with ocean freight would be considered an asset
  • Assume Account Manager responsibilities in his/her absence
  • Maintain accurate customs client information; and
  • Other duties that may be assigned.


  • Completion of Grade XII or equivalent;
  • Completion of Certified Customs Specialist Designation
  • Desire to obtain Certified Trade Compliance Specialist Designation
  • Ideally, 3-5 years of Customs Brokerage experience
  • Experience in applying tariff classification to products
  • Keyboarding skills – 40+ words per minute
  • Ability to manipulate information in Excel
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work accurately
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to prioritize work & time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Effective communication skills; and
  • Ability to perform daily job functions in mature and professional manner
