COVID-19 Update: CBSA Suspends Some Compliance Activity, Extends Deadlines

Posted April 07, 2020

In view of the impact that COVID-19 is having on individuals and businesses across the country, the Canada Border Services Agency recently advised that it has temporarily suspended trade compliance activity interaction with importers/exporters and CBSA representatives for the time being.

Deadlines Extended

Additionally, all deadlines imposed in connection with compliance verifications are automatically extended by a period of time equivalent to the period of suspension.  Currently, the suspension period is set to end on April 20, however, given the circumstances, it is expected this date will be re-evaluated periodically and extended as necessary.

Claims and Appeals

It should be noted that refund claims, drawbacks and appeals will all continue to be accepted and processed during the suspension period.  Importers/exporters should therefore continue adhering to the existing timeframes for filing any of the above.
