The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises that on August 27, 2020, new Harmonized System/Other Government Department (HS/OGD) extension codes for organic eggs and shell egg products were published in the Automated Import Reference System (AIRS).
Additionally, the organic import admissibility requirements for these products have been incorporated into AIRS as per Part 13 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations.
New Organic Product Import Requirements
As a result of these updates to AIRS, importers will now be required to submit a digital copy of organic product certificates when declaring organic products online using the Integrated Import Declaration (IID) database.
Beginning October 1, 2020, importers of fresh fruits and vegetables will also be required to submit a digital copy of organic product certificate when using the IID to declare organic products online. CFIA encourages users to verify the import admissibility requirements for fresh fruit and vegetables (including organic requirements) through AIRS.
Note: A valid organic certificate, which must be must be issued by an accredited certification body, is required for all imports of organic products.
Voluntary Compliance Expected
The new OGD codes are intended to differentiate organic products from conventional products. CFIA states that it is the responsibility of the importer to familiarize themselves with the new codes and comply with the import requirements.
