Canada’s export credit agency will be lead by woman for the first time in its 75-year history.

Trade Minister Jim Carr on Thursday named Mairead Lavery the next president and CEO of Export Development Canada, which provides loans, advice and other services to companies seeking international markets for their goods. Founded in 1944, the EDC is a Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the trade minister.

In a statement, Carr said Lavery’s experience will “help propel the evolution of EDC’s mandate” to develop Canadian trade and enhance the capacity of Canadian companies to take advantage of “international business opportunities.”

According to EDC figures, it served more than 9,000 Canadian businesses through about 5,000 transactions in 2017. This facilitated more than $103-billion in business, the organization said. Click here to read more.
