Europe was never an easy fit with Britain. It wouldn’t commit to a single currency, for example. Then there was the European Court of Justice imposing its laws on Britain, plus the high cost of maintaining all that European bureaucracy. Let’s not even mention immigration. Did Britain have any control over its affairs?
