he Government of Canada has launched a 30-day public consultation to assess potential trade measures aimed at preventing the diversion of steel products into the Canadian market.

This comes in the wake of recent U.S. trade actions that may prompt third-country steel exporters to redirect their products northward.

Commitment to Fairness and Stability

The consultation was announced by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance, and the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. Both emphasized the importance of protecting the domestic steel market and ensuring fair competition for Canadian businesses.

“Our government is committed to maintaining a fair and competitive market for Canadian businesses,” said Minister Champagne. “We are taking proactive steps to ensure our domestic industry is not unfairly impacted by global trade shifts.”

Your Input Matters: Help Shape Canada’s Trade Response

The government is seeking feedback from a broad range of stakeholders including steel producers, manufacturers, consumers, and other interested parties. Input may help inform options such as safeguards, surtaxes, or other trade remedies.

“We are looking to our industry partners, workers, and communities to help inform our approach,” said Minister Anand. “Canada must remain vigilant and responsive to changes in the global steel market.”
