Recover Canada’s Steel and Aluminum Surtax

ffective October 15, 2024, the Canadian government intends to apply a 25 per cent surtax on imports of steel and aluminum from China. However, there is a possibility that importers and manufacturers can recover this surtax.
Recovery Potential
If you import and/or use steel or aluminum from China in your manufacturing process and later export the finished goods, you may qualify for surtax recovery through the Duty Drawback Program. This program is designed to reimburse surtaxes on inputs that are incorporated into exported products.
Importer of Record
If your business directly imports these materials into the commerce of Canada, managing this recovery process is relatively straightforward via the duty drawback application. GHY/your service provider can work with you to file a duty drawback claim accurately and quickly.
Supplier as Importer of Record
If your suppliers are the importers of record and pass on cost increases due to the surtax, there’s still a way for you to recover it. By working with your suppliers and GHY/ your service provider you can may refunds if the surtaxed materials are used in the manufacturing of goods that are exported outside of Canada.
