What is Duty Recovery?

Did you know that by overpaying duties by just 1% for a full year, your company could have missed out on a million dollars’ worth of investment opportunities?

Duty recovery and overall cost-saving opportunities can be identified and achieved through a variety of methods by our Global Trade Services team. We conduct an in-depth forensic review of your trade activities and supply chain establishments, which cover, but are not limited to:

  • Tariff Classification and Rulings
  • Origin of Goods and Free Trade Agreements
  • Valuation of Goods
  • Duty Drawbacks and Remission

How to Get Duty Back?

Fill out our Firm Report Application to initiate the process and delegate GHY to perform your Duty Recovery assessment.

*Please note that Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) fees may apply.

We’ll run a thorough review of your import transactions and duty payments covering the past 4 years.

You’ll receive a report stating if you have any duties available for recovery.

We’ll file all necessary refund claim documents on your behalf and recover the amount you’re entitled to!

To make sure that this process goes smoothly, it is important that any additional information requested by your broker is provided quickly. This may include items such as origin of goods documentation, commercial invoices, bill of lading, and shippers export declaration. If you have questions about the documents you need, ask your broker. They are there to assist you and can help answer all of your questions.

Duty Refund Under CPTPP

If you’re importing goods into Canada from any one country and/or countries under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), you may eligible to claim a refund on excess duties paid on your imports if you did not claim preferential tariff treatment at the time of importation.
