Winter Clothing Request for Ukrainian Military
Trade Update • Sept. 27, 2022
In recent weeks NATO and the government of Ukraine have asked Canada and other NATO countries to supply winter supplies for the Ukrainian military.
The request is of some urgency as the war in Ukraine will extend into the winter, and supplies have been depleted.
The Canadian Apparel Federation (CAF) convened an online meeting last week where the Canadian government outlined its plans to purchase apparel for the Ukrainian military. The majority of those in attendance were companies that are established suppliers of military apparel.
The Canadian government has confirmed that it wishes to source the following products immediately:
- Winter hats
- Winter jackets
- Fleece Jackets
- Thermals (Top and bottom)
- Winter Gloves
- Winter Jackets and Trousers for armoured crews
At the outset the budget for this is $10 to 15 million; this may increase. The request is for clothing appropriate for use by the Ukrainian military. The Canadian government will not limit its purchases to goods manufactured to military specifications, even though they will likely put a priority on military goods. For that reason the Canadian Apparel Federation (CAF) encourages other manufacturers to notify them if they would like to see the slides presented at the meeting last week and contact info for the Department of National Defence.
